A Little About Me – My Journey from Baking to Thermomix
My journey has always centred around a love of food, cooking and baking, which started at a very young age. My Mum was a huge influence, teaching me many of the skills that I still use today. After leaving school, I went on to study at one of the country's top catering colleges, with a dream of one day running my own food business.
That dream became a reality in 2011 when I took over a small café on the outskirts of Malvern, Worcestershire. Just a year later, in November 2012, I opened a larger café in the popular shopping area of Barnards Green. Following a change in personal circumstances, I moved into a unit focusing on cake production for local businesses and outside catering.
However, I missed the buzz of running a café, and when a commercial property near my home became available, I decided to turn it into a café and kitchen with the help of my son Jake, who was also a chef and keen baker.Cooking and baking everything from scratch soon made the café a popular destination, and Jake's sourdough bread became something of a local legend!
When Jake relocated in 2020, he gave me a rather hurried crash course in sourdough baking, hoping I could at least keep enough bread on the menu. My first attempt was, quite honestly, a disaster! But with plenty of practice, things improved, and before long customers were giving me wonderful feedback and asking to buy whole loaves to take home, often telling me it was the best sourdough they had ever tasted.In 2022, I decided to put my bread to the test and entered my 65/35 white, wholemeal and rye sourdough into the Guild of Fine Food's Great Taste Awards. I was absolutely delighted when, in August that year, it received a Great Taste Award!
After selling my café and kitchen in 2023, I continued baking, supplying local businesses and selling my sourdough and other homemade goodies at farmers' markets and local events. Over the last year, family commitments and changing circumstances have led me in a slightly different direction. Although I still love baking for family and friends, I have now stepped away from baking commercially.
Discovering Thermomix
I've always loved a kitchen gadget, and my home kitchen was traditionally full of all sorts of small and medium-sized appliances! Although I had seen Thermomix being used in professional restaurant kitchens and by celebrity chefs, I hadn't appreciated just what an incredible asset it could be in a home kitchen.
Around three years ago, I started researching Thermomix as something I could use at home. I arranged a demonstration and, despite my partner being extremely sceptical beforehand, we were both completely wowed by what it could do!I could simply have bought one, but decided to set myself the challenge of earning it for free through becoming an Advisor – and I succeeded!
I quickly became a huge fan. I use my Thermomix morning, noon and night, from making porridge at breakfast to cocktails in the evening, with pretty much everything in between. In fact, I was so impressed that I cleared out two kitchen cupboards of gadgets that my Thermomix could replace!
Sharing My Passion
I've now been a Thermomix Advisor for nearly three years, and I genuinely love sharing my enthusiasm for this amazing machine. Whether I'm demonstrating to someone who is completely new to Thermomix or supporting an existing owner, I enjoy showing people just how much it can do and helping them get the very best out of their investment.
My approach is very much about showing how Thermomix can fit into everyday life, whatever your cooking ability or lifestyle.You might be an accomplished cook who would love an extra pair of hands in the kitchen, someone who struggles to find the time or inspiration to cook from scratch, or someone who simply says they can't cook at all. Thermomix really is for everyone!
I can show you how it can simplify your everyday cooking, help you save time and money, and perhaps even inspire you to enjoy spending more time in the kitchen.I'm now based in the beautiful Teifi Valley on the Carmarthenshire/Ceredigion border in West Wales. I offer online demonstrations to anyone across the UK, as well as in-person demonstrations and cooking experiences locally. You'll also often find me with my Thermomix at markets, events and other activities I attend.
